ABOUT THE VIEW: This is one of those rare vantage points from highway one where you can see a beach below. However the beach isn't my favorite part of the view. I love letting the eye wander back to the horizon. The oranges fade to green and then blue. The moisture in the air from the ocean brings cool colors to the land.

ABOUT BIG SUR: Big Sur's landscape is wild and rugged. There are very few roads and permanent residents. The Santa Lucia mountains roll right into the sea. Highway one sits way up above the ocean and the cliffs are so steep and tall, most of the time you cannot see the shore below you. I even get dizzy sometimes when I drive up into the neighborhoods above the highway. But the ocean is so vast and beautiful when I am that high that if I can settle in, take deep breaths and stay still, I can enjoy it.

It is easy just to talk about the landscape when describing Big Sur, but I want to note that the region's indigenous people, the Esselen, thrived here for millenia. Although the land was taken from them centuries ago, today there are still members of the Esselen tribe in Monterey County. As a group, they focus on conserving land, continuing cultural traditions and preserving the cultural heritage of the tribe.
